What is your time frame for considering that a song or album has “stood the test of time”?

It seems that everyone has their own measurement of time for determining if a song, album or even a musical artist has weathered the test of time, in order to be considered “classic”.

What is your personal time frame for considering that a song or album has “stood the test of time”?

It really depends on how relevant the music is. Some albums are classic and have “stood the test of time’ because they captured a slice of time so perfectly. Others because the music is “timeless” and is relevant to any time, including the present.

And then there are the albums that are instant classics. They encompass both relevance and longevity. “Landmark” albums. For instance:

The Beatles “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”
Nirvana “Nevermind”
Metallica ” Master Of Puppets”
The Beatles “White Album”
U2 “The Joshua Tree”
Pink Floyd “Dark Side of the Moon”

This includes many, many more. I could literally list and name hundreds, but for practicality’s named these.

As far as a certain time frame passing by, I’d say that if a band or artist is still active (putting out new, relevant music)after ten or fifteen years then they obviously have a dedicated following and surely have an album or albums that have stood the test of time. For singles, those which are given heavy radio play ten years down the road are everlasting. Any song that you can sing all the words to has probably stood the test of time for you.
