Should I send a dance tape with my college application?
I did practically no sports in high school. The only thing I did was gymnastics for 2nd semester my junior year-and this year my school may not even have it.
Sports and extracurricular activities like sports I’m told are a crucial part of a college application. I want to show colleges I didn’t waste time while I was in high school.
Also, if I were to send a dance tape, how long should the dance be? Should I do a different dance for each style I’ve studied, or just like…2, such as one tap and one lyrical/open routine, the latter to show grounding in ballet and jazz influences.
I’m not going to be doing dance as my major or minor, but I may take some classes and, depending on which college I’m going to, have a Theatre/Musical Theatre major.
Please help me!
I you are not applying to be a dance major, I would not send a tape. Chances are they won’t look at it anyway, it isn’t really relevant.
The way you show that you were involved in activities is to include it in the activities section of your application.
Example:
Activities:
Piedmont Dance Center
September 2000-Present
Studied ballet, tap and jazz dance. Performed in yearly exhibition.
It is okay to include pre-high school activities in your application IF you are still involved.
You also might be able to work dance into your personal statement.
If you absolutely must send in a video, make it very short- 10 mins would be too long. At most it should be a highlights reel of past performances. But really, I don’t think it is appropriate.
